Activity 2: Walk in My Shoes

Students are given brief scenarios describing challenges another person might face and are asked to act out how they would respond.

Activity 3: Status Walk

Students will explore how body language, posture, movement, and eye contact communicate different levels of status and influence character relationships.

Activity 4: Perspective Circle

Students will develop cognitive, emotional, and compassionate empathy by experiencing multiple perspectives within the same scenario and identifying ways to support others.

Research Behind the Toolkit

Empathy is increasingly recognized as a critical skill for fostering social awareness, collaboration, and emotional intelligence in educational settings and beyond. Developing empathy and learning how to use it as a skill is fundamental in building concrete emotional intelligence and awareness amongst younger students. The research conducted for this toolkit investigates the extent to which theatre-based learning and role-play can enhance empathy development and student engagement among middle school students. Drawing on research from theatre education, psychology, and social-emotional learning, this project examines how embodied performance activities encourage students to imagine perspectives different from their own while maintaining critical reflection. This toolkit for middle school teachers provides the necessary information and activities in order to properly implement theatre-based learning and role play into curricula beyond drama class, drawing on research from theatre education, psychology, and social-emotional learning.
